University Entrance
Information about university entrance requirements, including the role of TCE and ATAR, and how Hobart College supports students planning tertiary study.
University entrance requirements vary depending on the course and institution. At Hobart College, students are supported to understand their options and plan pathways that align with their goals and interests.
Understanding University Entrance

The Tasmanian Certificate of Education (TCE) is the qualification awarded to students who meet the requirements of senior secondary study in Tasmania.
To achieve the TCE, students must meet literacy, numeracy, participation, and achievement standards through their senior secondary program. Learn about senior secondary courses.
The Tertiary Entrance Score (TES) is used by the University of Tasmania as part of its admission process.
TES is calculated using results from eligible senior secondary courses and may be used for entry into some University of Tasmania courses.
Not all students receive a TES, and it is only relevant for specific university pathways.
Students are supported to understand whether TES is relevant to their intended university study.
The Australian Tertiary Admission Rank (ATAR) is a ranking used by universities across Australia to compare students for entry into tertiary study. It is a rank, not a score.
ATAR eligibility is based on results from eligible senior secondary courses. Course selection and planning are important and are supported by staff at Hobart College.
he Schools Recommendation Program (SRP) is an alternative entry pathway used by the University of Tasmania for some courses.
Through SRP, schools may recommend students for university entry based on their overall performance, engagement, and suitability for tertiary study — rather than relying solely on an ATAR.
SRP is not available for all courses, and eligibility depends on individual circumstances and university requirements.
Not all students will be eligible for SRP, and it is not guaranteed entry.
Students are supported by staff to understand whether the Schools Recommendation Program may be an option for their chosen pathway.
